2008 FZ1 Done my way

Postby trav87 » August 5th, 2011, 9:13 am

In march of last year I had a wild hair and took a "personal" day from work and went motorcycle shopping. I had been off motorcycles for over 10 years and had the itch. Power Yamaha had just what I was looking for.

2008 Granite Grey FZ1 with a GYTR slip on. Completely stock other wise.
Image

Played around with making a fender eliminator, flush mounts, integrated tail light, frame sliders, and added a tank bag.
Image

Decided the stock seat sucked, so I found a GYTR Comfort Seat, added an alaskan leather seat pad, changed from tank bag to soft luggage, Adjustable shorty levers, fender eliminator that quit making my plate rub on the rear tire, and MRA Vario adjustable wind screen
Image

I still wasn't too comfortable on longer trips and couldn't have a passenger, so I modified some Buell pegs that lowered my feet about an inch, found a guy that made some sweet fold up highway pegs, Mounted up some Pilot Road 3's, and changed to a Givi PLX 35 hard bag setup with SW Motech quick release racks.
Image

I still have a few things left to do, but have been focusing on just riding it lately. And my new car has been eating up my spare money...I might have a passion for 4 wheels still, as long as I can have fun racing it.

Nice setup and great ingenuity using Buell pegs and mounting highway pegs. And who cares about dirt, function over frosting I say.

Nice. You've put a lot of time & money into your setup. I love those Givi bags. I need to break down & spend some money on a setup like that. I'm tired of worrying about the finish when riding with soft bags.

Had a little accident couple weeks ago zipping up Quartzville...

A little fairing damage and a couple scrapes on the bottom of one Givi
Image

A slight seperation and sprained shoulder to add to the already twisted collar bone
Image

Good news is it's about $100 for a good used fairing, a little sanding and touch up to the radiator gaurd, and I already straightened out the bent fairing brackets

Tear down
Image

Starting to put it back together, still need to buy a fairing, so I will rock the damaged one as a reminder

Damn. Glad to hear you're mostly OK, but sorry to hear you're hurt at all. Also glad to hear that repairs on the bike are going to be cheap. So a blind left corner snuck up on you? Was it a decreasing radius or just sharper than you anticipated? Did you panic & do all the wrong things? Or were you simply going too fast & there was nothing that could be done? Basically, I guess I'm asking if there's anything we can learn from your experience.

I would say panic and did everything wrong. I looks like a sharp corner and it's not that bad, but stupid hurts and I was riding stupid.

Ah...yeah. Bum deal man. Have you thought about taking the Advanced Rider Training from Team Oregon? It's amazing how much it's helped me. Trusting my front tire was one of the 2 things I got out of the class the most. It's led to me handling what would be panic situations more calmly these days. The head turn was the other. Those two things have gotten me out of some really sticky situations lately.

Glad you're mostly OK.

I wish I still had my x-rays from the collar bone. I wrecked my Banshee at Florence in '02. 8 broken vertebrea and shattered my collar bone. To much back trauma to try and fix the collar bone so that's how it grew back together.

Edit: Just ordered new copies of my x-rays from OHSU

Well my luck took a turn for the worse Friday...bike is at the dealer getting an estimate for damage from hitting some gravel mid-corner on our way out to Goldendale, WA. Luckily I found the gravel so the others missed it. We had spent the last 4-5 hours on tight twisty single lane forestry roads having a blast soaking in the sights and smells of Cascades. Got out the the east side of the hills and were running out of daylight. Heading down into Tygh Valley I lowsided and the bike and I slid a long ways accross both lanes of traffic and into the shoulder stopping just short of a steep drop off. I walked away with a couple bruises and about a 1" square bit of road rash on my forearm.

We managed to get the bars bent back a little, but any further would have kinked them. Put on over 400 miles with them like that.
Full face helmet, two piece leathers, and proper boots saved my ass

Werent you talking about riding wheelies in another thread? Maybe you should have a stunter/streetfighter for "that type of riding" anyway. :wtf:

I think the bad juju might be the helmet...Had no problems/crashes before I bought that helmet. It saved my head, but got rashed up on the right side.
Yes, I have wheelied with this bike, and every other one I have owned. Say what you will about us "fools/squids/hooligans" that find a bit of pleasure riding on the back tire. There are times and places for general hooliganism, but there was none of that going on for the trip over.
I am going through a divorce, so my head hasn't been in the right place for a few months with all the stress, and I have been riding the snot out of my bike because I can block out all the crap and focus on the road in front of me. The previous wreck was just me pushing my bike to hard to escape my mental hell.

so long as that place is on the track or private property I take no issue with it. but if its on the street... :wtf:

but there was none of that going on for the trip over.

Fair enough.

thats a tough spot to be in. One one hand you find riding a good escape and a safe release. On the other hand you are not mentally all there and maybe even worse, riding agressively. Either way its gotten you into trouble. You know, its ok imho to put your own life on the line. Its your life. I say more power to you. Its not ok to put other people in jeopardy out on the streets though. Maybe you should sign up for one of those track days with Q or spend a little more time on the autocross course, but please, Im begging you...keep that off the streets.

ok, Im done preaching.

Hey, Trav! Sorry to hear about your most recent tumble. :( I, too, have gone through divorces and know exactly where you're at...and, it's not a fun place. But, try to be patient, try not to take everything real seriously, and, eventually you'll be clear of it all. :) Things have a way of working themselves out for the best. If you set up more rides and would like some company, let me know. I'm usually free or can get that way in a hurry. In any case, have fun & try to stay safe.

Well you were riding between two of the most responsible riders I know, and they said it was caused by the 3ft wide patch of gravel that you hit mid corner. Can't blame that on anything except gravity, and the fact that you were riding. Shit happens, and I'm glad you are ok to ride again. Now as to what you will be riding... :stir:

I believe this is the bike I test rode when I was at Power in late March. I know I saw one similar with the Givi bags plus it had a lot of other mods done as well. I think the one I was on had higher bars or risers on it. One thing I do remember tho ...when I dropped a couple gears and twisted the throttle, my eyes went to the back of my head!!

The FZ1 is a very nice bike but I ended up coming back on the following Monday and buying the Z1000. Quick, nimble fun machine. It reminded me of an older 2k Buell X1 I once had. ...only faster 8-)

That would be the one. I had been eyeballing it on the Power website for a few weeks before pulling the trigger. It might have one or two power mods done to it...lol Dropping two and twisting the throttle engages the warp drive it seems.

It seems that the tires are getting worn, but they were fairly flat spotted when I got it. I really liked the PR3's I had on the old one, so most likely will be tossing another set on this one.

Had a set of PR's, PR2ct's but never PR3's. Once these stockers wear out, I might have to try them. The tread design is ...unique!

Rumor is (and it's only rumor to me because I'm still on a set of PR2s) they last a bit longer & are really difficult to break free in wet conditions. Bike Magazine test road the PR3s on the track in the rain & standing water. The test rider was able to CONSISTENTLY put his knee down in those conditions. Naw...I wouldn't recommend trying that at home, but it's very telling.

I "scrubbed" my PR2's in the rain... didn't even think about it until I was done. Wasn't raining when I rolled out, but a few miles down the road (and on the first real corners) there was plenty of wet pavement.
Didn't even bobble a tiny ammount. Solid. PR3's will probably be the next set.
