Carson WA to Cougar WA

Postby ELI the ICE man » June 1st, 2017, 3:22 pm

This route has survived the winter well with little change. Despite the how hard some of our local roads have been hit, this one seems virtually unaffected.
While there are still trace amounts of snow along the sides of the road, the pavement is clean and clear.

From Carson up to the McClellan overlook is in fantastic shape (as always) and you can get full use of your tires.... watch that the speed limit in the best part is only 30mph and it begs for much more. Use Caution.

The only bad part of the road is on the cougar side of the McClellan overlook (St. Helens view point) along NF 90.
The old pot holes and gravely debris still remains, as well as pine needles and grit near the road edges. When you get around the reservoirs it clears up, but the sun through the trees is very strobe like and you can barely see obstacles in the road.

Further around the reservoirs and into Cougar is great.

After you eat lunch in Cougar, I suggest going south to Amboy and Battle Ground. Those roads are also in great shape with only a few corners with grit in them.

Great ride. Do it.

EDIT: including google maps fo the roads/loop from above.

That loop is quite a bit shorter than I expected.

Is that good or bad?
I have experienced it taking ~5-6 hours starting and ending in Hillsboro with a single gas stop in Carson and a Food stop in Cougar.
If on a gas gulping machine or small tank, then gas in Amboy or Battleground too.
Add more time for relaxing at the overlook. It is a nice day, but not a long iron but day.

That might actually be a good loop for some of us southern folks to join you on now that I think about it.

There's gas in Cougar as well, where the cougar sculpture is, across from the restaurant

LOVE the first half of this. Coming down from McClellan has never been much fun with the condition of the pavement, and yep - the strobing of the dappled sun doesn't help any as it grows later in the day.

 I have to thank Mel for allowing me to go on a 'girls ride' once and introducing this loop to me. I have done it many more times with great success each time.
