Short Notice: Sunday July 1 Central Cascades Loop

Postby SWriverstone » June 30th, 2018, 11:41 am

Hi All:

I'm new to the forum and an experienced adventure-and-sport touring rider (12 years riding with 100K+ miles). I currently ride a V-Strom 650, and tend to ride at a sporting pace but nowhere close to knee-dragging. I'm 55 years old and have two kids—so I don't ride recklessly and don't take risks. (But I'm not slow.) I live in the South Hills of Eugene (not far from Chambers).

I'm planning to do one of two loop rides tomorrow (Sunday July 1). I'm leaning toward a 270-mile loop through the Central Cascades, including 58 to Aufderheide Scenic Byway (which should be construction-free and open for another week), McKenzie Pass (242), a stop in Sisters, then 20 to 22 to NF!! down past Quartzville Reservoir and back to Springfield/Eugene via Marcola. (See map below.)

The other shorter loop (around 200 miles) would be out Lorane Highway toward Upper Smith River Road to Reedsport on the coast, then up 101 to 126, Mapleton, then 36 back to Eugene.

I'd be happy doing either loop if anyone wants to join me (and the routes aren't etched in stone if we want to check out any other roads). I've ridden all these roads before so are familiar with them. Beautiful scenery, lots of nice twisties and excellent paved goat paths. :-) And the weather tomorrow looks perfect for riding! I'm also flexible on ride start time—I'm fine starting at the crack of dawn or a later, more leisurely start (plenty of daylight to do either ride!).

I'll check the forum again later today and tonight to see if anyone's interested. And for anyone who sees this and wants to go at the VERY last minute (e.g. tomorrow morning), I'll be at the Starbucks on Willamette near 29th Ave. at 8am.

Thanks!
Scott W.

I would have loved to join in on this, but took Saturday for my day to ride (and today for honey-do). Let us know which route you went. I'm interested in Aufderheide status because I thought it was still closed.

Hi wileycoyote and others—I ended up riding over to the coast instead. (I actually had my ride time lmited by home chores so opted for the shorter loop.) I'm curious about Aufderheide status too and might take a ride out there today or tomorrow just to check it out.

According to this update by Willamette NF...
https://www.fs.usda.gov/alerts/willamette/alerts-notices/?aid=46556
...they'll be doing construction on the road periodically throughout the summer, starting July 9th.

I'll try to avoid posting at the last second for the next ride!

I often enjoy taking short rides at lunch or in the late afternoon/evening during the weeks in summer, just to "stretch the tires" a bit. One of my favorite short loops is below—Lorane Highway to Briggs Hill Rd. to Territorial to Lorane. Perfect for when you only have an hour or less but want to enjoy some excellent twisties and beautiful scenery to clear your mind. :D

Just went on a short "breakfast ride" with Rick yesterday out in that area. I need to do that more often. FWIW, I'm more available for rides like that on Mondays & Fridays. Maybe we should get together & scrub some chicken strips sometime.
